POP3 (Post Office Protocol v3) lấy thư qua TCP 110. Sau khi tải xuống, bản sao trên máy chủ có bị xóa hay không phụ thuộc vào lệnh DELE của máy khách và chính sách máy chủ — khác với IMAP (143/993), vốn được thiết kế để giữ bản sao trên máy chủ. POP3 dùng văn bản rõ; biến thể TLS là POP3S trên cổng 995.
Registry assignments, software defaults and local listeners are different things. A port number alone does not identify or secure a service.
Configuration and troubleshooting
Khi không lấy được thư: khớp cổng máy khách (110 văn bản rõ / 995 TLS) với cấu hình máy chủ, rồi kiểm tra xác thực — phần lớn nhà cung cấp đã tắt xác thực bằng mật khẩu thông thường để dùng mật khẩu ứng dụng hoặc OAuth. Trên máy chủ dovecot, chạy `doveconf -n | grep -A5 protocol` để xác nhận POP3 đã bật. Gmail và Outlook mặc định tắt POP3; hãy bật trong phần cài đặt trước.
Important limitations
POP3 dạng rõ trên cổng 110 truyền thông tin đăng nhập không mã hóa — hãy dùng 995 (POP3S) trên mạng công cộng. POP3 mặc định xóa bản sao trên máy chủ sau khi tải xuống, nên hệ thống nhiều thiết bị nên dùng IMAP.
