Dovecot — Common Ports
Community software entries: links are references, not individual verification.
Role Unconfirmed (4)
POP3 (Post Office Protocol v3) fetches mail over TCP 110. After downloading, whether server copies are deleted depends on the client DELE command and server policy — unlike IMAP (143/993), which is designed to keep copies on the server. POP3 is plaintext; the TLS variant is POP3S on 995.
IMAPPOP3MailServer
IMAP on TCP 143 can upgrade a connection with STARTTLS when supported. It differs from implicit TLS on port 993.
IMAPPOP3MailServer
Port 993 provides IMAP mailbox access over implicit TLS. It is for reading and synchronizing mail, not SMTP submission.
SSL/TLSIMAPServer
TCP 995 is POP3S — POP3 wrapped in TLS from the first byte. It is the secure replacement for plaintext POP3 on 110 and the default in modern mail clients.

Frequently asked questions
What port does Dovecot use?
Dovecot commonly uses these ports: 110, 143, 993, 995. These are community database references — actual configuration may differ.
How do I check if Dovecot is running?
Run sudo ss -tlpn 'sport = :110 or sport = :143 or sport = :993 or sport = :995' on the server to check for listening processes on these ports. Also use systemctl status <service> to check the service state. Without root you may not see other users' processes. A listening port alone does not prove the software identity — verify with the config file and process name.
What category does Dovecot belong to?
Dovecot belongs to the Email & Messaging category. This page lists the software's port associations and their roles.
What other ports does Dovecot use besides the default?
Dovecot also uses these ports: 110, 143, 993, 995. Their purpose (admin interface, metrics, or alternative configuration) is detailed in the role-grouped list above.
